Drainage

Blocked drains can cause a variety of problems. You can find out who is responsible for fixing the issue using OFWAT's handy guide.

Individual home owners are accountable for private drains. You can prevent blockages by ensuring all outside gullies and gratings are clear of debris such as leaves and being careful what you put down your drains.

Emptying and repairing septic tanks should be carried out by the owner or occupier of the property.

Other responsibilities lie with:

• Severn Trent Water, which maintains public sewers in the District.
• Derbyshire County Council, which maintains road and street surface water gullies and drains.

If you have a drainage problem, we can help to identify where the responsibility lies and have legal powers to require the unblocking of drains and remediation of drainage defects.
