Trailers

To use a trailer with a licensed private hire vehicle, the trailer must be licensed.

Before we can grant a licence for a private hire trailer licence, we must be satisfied that the trailer is fit for purpose and does not pose a safety hazard.

In addition, it is essential that the driver has the right to tow a trailer on their DVLA licence and the vehicle has the necessary cover on the insurance policy. Any licence issued for a trailer will expire when the vehicle licence to which it is attached expires.

To help determine the above, the applicant is required to submit the following documents as well as the new trailer application form (pdf, 105kb) and the fee of £25:

  1. Copy of DVLA licence highlighting the appropriate permitting category to tow a trailer
  2. Copy of vehicle insurance highlighting proof trailer is insured for its purpose
  3. Depot inspection certificate.

Tests are carried out at our Depot. Appointments can be made by contacting us on 01283 595765/595716 during normal office hours or by contacting the Depot directly on 01283 595991.

Once you have passed the Depot test, the application form, original supporting documentation and relevant fee can be handed in at reception. There is no need to take a ticket. Reception will copy your original documents. The fee can be paid at the payment machines located in reception.

We will accept copies of the insurance policy direct from the insurance company via email. An applicant is also able to forward an email from the insurance company onto us.

An application will only be considered valid once all of the above items have been received. We aim to determine valid applications within five working days
