Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

There are more than 800 food businesses operating across South Derbyshire. Every time we visit them we assess the products they are handling, the practices they follow and the confidence we have in the way they are managed.

We use the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme to rate the hygiene in all retail food businesses

The scheme is a partnership between the Food Standards Agency and local authorities. It provides consumers with information about hygiene standards found in food businesses during inspections. The aim is to help the public make informed choices about where they eat out or shop for food.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme consists of six tiers; a score of five is the highest level, indicating very good standards of food hygiene, while a score of zero indicates that urgent improvement is necessary.

Private premises like child minders are not rated. Also, manufacturers, packers and very low risk shops, such as chemists, newsagents and garden centres, will not be rated.

Food hygiene certificates and door/window stickers (pdf, 1.8mb) are given to the businesses to allow them to show the ratings of premises we have checked.
