Problems paying Council Tax

If you are having problems paying your Council Tax bill, let us know as soon as possible.

Debts like your rent and Council Tax are priority debts

It is important that you manage your priority debts as some creditors could take away your home (repossession or eviction) or enforcement agents (previously known as bailiffs), could visit to remove items from your home.

What happens if I don’t pay on time?

We will remind you, but not more than twice in a financial year, and if necessary will issue a summons for you to attend court.

If non-payment continues, we have several options, including referral to an enforcement agent, attachments of earnings or Benefits, charging orders and forced sale. Additional fees will be incurred if we have to take enforcement action.

As a final resort, we may seek committal to prison.

We strongly encourage taxpayers to contact us before we have to take action as the recovery cost is added to the individual debtor’s account.
