Maurice Lea Memorial Park in Church Gresley recently unveiled its swashbuckling new pirate-themed play area, which was a huge hit with children and families across South Derbyshire.

The exciting new play area, installed by South Derbyshire District Council, was revealed just in time for the half-term break, drawing over 100 people to the park to enjoy the new facilities.

Thanks to a £200,000 capital investment, the play area forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to provide high-quality, accessible recreational spaces for families across the District. In the past year (2024/25), South Derbyshire District Council has invested more than £280k in play area improvements, as part of a £1.3m five-year investment plan aimed at enhancing parks and recreational spaces.

The Maurice Lea Memorial Park play area, designed to bring joy and spark imagination, offers a range of state-of-the-art equipment, including pirate ships, climbing frames, and slides. The interactive play space provides children with the opportunity to engage in creative play, while parents can enjoy the newly refreshed surroundings.

The grand opening event saw families coming together in full pirate attire, adding to the festive atmosphere. Pirates, both big and small, donned eye patches, hats, and bandanas, making it a memorable day of adventure for all who attended.

Two lucky children were awarded prizes during the event, presented by Councillor Sean Bambrick, Chair of South Derbyshire District Council.

“We were thrilled to see so many families come together to celebrate the new play area,” said Councillor Bambrick. “It was fantastic to see children having fun, making memories, and using their imaginations in this new creative space. It’s wonderful to see the community enjoying the improvements we’ve made.”

The play area has already become a popular spot for local families, ensuring that Maurice Lea Memorial Park continues to be a vibrant, enjoyable space for all.
