Community input sought on £280,000 investment in play areas
Over a quarter of a million pounds is to be invested to rejuvenate recreational spaces across the District and the Council wants residents’ views on how this should best be spent.
Following the approval of its budget for 2024/2025 at Full Council on Wednesday 28 February, £280,000 was committed to revamp several of the District’s play areas.
The initial focus will be on Maurice Lea Memorial Park, Swadlincote Woodlands, and Eureka Park.
This significant investment underscores the Council’s commitment to enhancing leisure opportunities and promoting community well-being. The overhaul of these play areas aims to create vibrant, inclusive spaces that cater to the diverse needs and interests of residents across the District.
South Derbyshire District Council Leader, Councillor Robert Pearson emphasized the importance of providing high-quality recreational facilities for all communities.
"Having great places for all communities to enjoy is crucial for promoting health and wellbeing," said Cllr Pearson. "By investing in our play areas, we are not only creating opportunities for physical activity and social interaction but also fostering a sense of belonging and community pride."
As part of the initiative, the Council is seeking input from both users and non-users of the selected play areas to gather feedback on desired improvements and features. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that the revitalization efforts align with the preferences and priorities of the local community.
"We want to hear from residents about their ideas and suggestions for enhancing these play areas," added Sean McBurney, Head of Cultural and Community Services. "By actively involving the community in the planning process, we can create spaces that meet the needs of children, families, and individuals of all ages."
Residents are invited to share their views by completing a short survey, which will remain open until Monday, 1 April 2024.
The feedback received will be carefully considered in the development of plans for the revitalization of Maurice Lea Memorial Park, Swadlincote Woodlands, and Eureka Park.
These plans will then be subject to further consultation before implementation.
