Remembering the fragility of freedom
Today (30 January) sees the final day of an exhibition in South Derbyshire to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD).
Focused on the theme for this year’s HMD, the Fragility of Freedom, the exhibition featured posters, information boards, and powerful images, providing a thought-provoking reminder of the restriction of freedom and self-identity experienced by Jewish communities under Nazi persecution.
The exhibition was one of several activities organised by South Derbyshire District Council for HMD.
Throughout the week, information about the commemoration was posted on the council’s social media platforms, and details of the exhibition were shared on an interactive map on the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s website.
A commemorative pear tree was planted at Rosliston Forestry Centre by Chair of the council, Councillor Sean Bambrick.
Speaking at the dedication ceremony, Cllr Bambrick said: “Today many people in western democracies take freedoms for granted – this Holocaust Memorial Day, we can reflect on how these freedoms need to be valued, and on how many people around the world face restrictions to their freedoms to live, worship, work and love freely.
“This year we dedicate a pear tree at Rosliston Forestry Centre, in memory of all who have suffered persecution and those who still experience persecution today.”
