The Council's response
On Monday16 December 2024, the Government set out their proposals for the future delivery of public services and the arrangements for local government.
The below statement has been issued by the Council's Leader regarding this Devolution White Paper announcement.
South Derbyshire District Council Leader, Councillor Robert Pearson:
"The launch of the Devolution White Paper marks a pivotal moment for the future of local government and public service delivery in the UK. The Government’s proposals outline significant changes to how power is devolved from Westminster and how local councils are structured, particularly in areas like South Derbyshire, where two tiers of local government currently operate.
"At South Derbyshire, we are proud to serve our residents and customers, alongside our public and private sectors partners, to improve their lives and the District through delivering the key priorities in our Council Plan 2024-28.
"While we welcome the opportunity for greater local decision-making, we must carefully assess the implications and ensure local government is truly local and connected to its communities.
"As the Controlling Group, we will work collaboratively with all Members and the Council’s Leadership Team to fully engage in reviewing this extensive document and will collaborate closely with our staff, regional colleagues, and partners to shape a response that safeguards the best interests of South Derbyshire.
"Change on this scale doesn’t happen overnight, but it is essential that our voice is heard early in this process. We remain committed to keeping our residents, staff, and stakeholders informed and involved every step of the way as the Government’s plans take shape."
