The much-loved Rosliston Forestry Centre, located in the heart of the National Forest, marked its 30th birthday in style earlier this week (Tuesday, 10 December).

The 154-acre site has been a cherished tourist attraction in South Derbyshire for three decades, and drew a diverse crowd of partners, stakeholders, staff, volunteers, local councillors, and residents to celebrate its remarkable achievements and this significant milestone.

Many of the staff and volunteers who were present at the centre’s launch in 1994 were joined by representatives from key partners, including Forestry England, the National Forest, Rolls-Royce PLC, local businesses, and community members. Together, they shared memories and reflected on the centre’s extraordinary journey and contributions over the years.

The event featured displays of photographs and press clippings chronicling the centre's rich history and impact. Messages of congratulations from Rosliston Primary School children and other well-wishers were also proudly exhibited, highlighting the community's affection for Rosliston.

Guests enjoyed refreshments and conversation before hearing heartfelt speeches from past and present staff, partners, and South Derbyshire District Council representatives.

John Everitt OBE, Chief Executive of the National Forest, commented: "Rosliston Forestry Centre exemplifies the transformative power of trees and partnerships. Over the past 30 years, this popular attraction has grown into an important destination at the heart of the National Forest, showcasing the beauty of woodland and the strength of community collaboration.

"The National Forest is immensely proud to have played a small part in Rosliston’s success, working closely with partners to create a vibrant and welcoming space for people and wildlife alike. The initial planting of 120,000 trees laid the foundation for an enduring legacy, and it’s a privilege to celebrate this milestone with all who have contributed to its success."

“Rosliston Forestry Centre holds a special place in the heart of South Derbyshire. Over the past 30 years, it has become a community cornerstone for so many, bringing people together through its natural beauty, environmental education, and diverse activities. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved, and we are excited to see Rosliston continue to evolve and inspire in the years to come," lamented Councillor Sean Bambrick, Chair of South Derbyshire District Council.

The day concluded with photography sessions and guided walks to commemorate the occasion and capture the significance of this remarkable milestone.

Paddy Harrop,  Forest Management Director - Central England,  Forestry England added: “We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with the new generation of forestry staff, former colleagues, and the wider community, including our partner organisations. Rosliston Forestry Centre stands as a shining example of one of the first multipurpose community woodlands within the National Forest. Providing a valuable timber resource for the nation as well as significant benefits for people and nature. Forestry England remains committed to managing and nurturing this beautiful site, ensuring it flourishes for future generations. This celebration is a testament to the power of community and collaboration in creating something truly special for everyone.”

Not only was it a day of reflection, but it also fostered a great sense of optimism and excitement for the next 30 years of Rosliston Forestry Centre, as it continues to enrich the lives of South Derbyshire residents, local schools and visitors from far and wide.
