New leader for South Derbyshire District Council
Councillor Robert Pearson has been announced as the new leader of South Derbyshire District Council.
Dr Pearson has served as Labour councillor for Midway ward since May 2011 and also serves as the chair of the council’s Finance and Management Committee.
His appointment was announced at a council meeting on Thursday 18 May.
Councillor Robert Pearson said on his appointment: ”I’m immensely proud to have been appointed leader of South Derbyshire District Council, working alongside an extremely capable group of Labour councillors.
“With the mandate given to us in the election, and the outstanding staff who work for the council, we are in a strong position to deliver the services our residents need and cement South Derbyshire's position as a place for growth and investment.”
Following the local elections on 4 May, the council currently consists of:
- 23 Labour councillors
- Nine Conservative councillors
- One independent councillor.
An election to the Hilton ward is due to be held on Thursday 15 June following the abandonment of poll due to the death of candidate and former councillor Gillian Lemmon.
