New gully tanker named

South Derbyshire District Council’s new gully tanker has been named and is now showing off its brand-new signage.

Back in the autumn, the £160,000 tanker started its working life in South Derbyshire and the Council launched a fun competition to help name the vehicle.

Following scores of suggestions, and difficult decisions, a name was chosen by the Council’s Street Scene Team. The gully tanker has now officially received its name and is called: ‘Gulliver’.

The successful name was a popular choice and was put forward by three local residents: Charlotte Baker of Woodville, Lawrence Cox of Swadlincote and Kate from Overseal.

Gulliver is fitted with a sludge breaker and vacuum pump for simultaneous debris collection, high pressure jetting pumps and the latest high-tech equipment that helps keep gullies and pipework clean of debris - which helps prevent flooding and other disruptions.

The new tanker replaced the need to hire vehicles, which in the long term is making the job significantly more economical.

Councillor Stephen Taylor, Chair of the Council’s Environment and Development Service Committee said: “It’s been a fun competition engaging with residents to help name the Council’s latest investment.

“There were some interesting submissions for the team to sieve through, but Gulliver was a popular choice and seemed a natural fit.

“We are all wishing Gulliver all the best and a long future helping keep the District’s gullies clean and free of debris."
