Following ‘The Lights Before Christmas’ last weekend, this Saturday (3 December) is another day of free festive fun for all the family, organised by South Derbyshire District Council.

Taking place from 10am to 4pm on Small Business Saturday, Festive Fun Day is designed to support local businesses.

There will be lots of opportunities to ‘Shop Local’ including festive stalls in the town and at the Town Hall, as well as the traditional market.

For one day only – passenger rail services will be returning to Swadlincote for the first time in 75 years. Visitors will be able to jump aboard the Christmas land train and take a free trip to discover the many shops along the High Street.

Visitors can also find the magical winter sprites, meet a friendly, inquisitive polar bear and look out for the Naughty Elf around the town. Live music will be provided by the Rolls Royce Derby Band and there is free face painting for children too.

Following its successful launch at the Christmas lights event, visitors can participate in the free Santa Passport Trail. Santa is hiding in businesses around Swadlincote, find him and collect a stamp to get a small prize and enter Santa’s big prize draw to win great prizes, such as a Nintendo Switch and gift hampers. Collect your trail map from the new Visitor Information Centre on High Street and return to claim a prize.

Councillor Kevin Richards, South Derbyshire District Council’s Leader, said: “Supporting local businesses is a key priority for the Council and I am looking forward to welcoming people from near and far to Swadlincote Town Centre this Saturday to join in the free fun and help the local economy.”

Also on the day, Sharpe’s Pottery Museum is holding a ‘Christmas Pinchpot workshop with Nicola Rose Ceramics‘. This is a free drop in event from 1pm to 3pm.

Swadlincote Library is holding a ‘Lego Christmas Challenge’ in the library from 10am to noon. It is a free family activity but essential to book in advance. To book, call 01629 533013.

The Bus Park Community Hub & Cafe will be holding their annual Christmas Market from 10am-1pm, with craft stalls, tombola and raffle.

Estate agents Your Move will be joining in with a colouring competition – pick up a colouring sheet from the shop on the day and then return your completed masterpiece to 42 High Street by 16 December to be in with a chance of winning.

There are lots of other seasonal events and activities taking place throughout the district in the weeks leading up to Christmas, including a Festive Market on Saturday 10 December, visit: www.visitsouthderbyshire.co.uk/christmas to find out more.
