After a two-year absence due to COVID-19, the popular Liberation Day event organised by South Derbyshire District Council is back.

The free afternoon for South Derbyshire residents aged 60 and over will make its return next month - this time it will be held outdoors at Maurice Lea Memorial Park, Church Gresley.

On Wednesday 18 May (1.30pm - 4pm) senior residents will be able to enjoy live 'big band' music, tea and cake, advice, information from guest speakers and taster sessions from local services in what promises to be the biggest Liberation Day event yet.

Not only will this be a free afternoon of live entertainment and valuable information - the Council is also providing free transport to the event, plus exclusive goodie bags and refreshment vouchers.

To claim a goodie bag, refreshment voucher and free transport (if required) South Derbyshire residents over 60 must call the dedicated phone lines on 01283 595851 or 01283 228753. These lines are only open from Monday 25 to Friday 29 April, between the hours of 9:30am - 12:30pm and 2pm - 4pm.

The taster sessions and information available will focus on over 60's staying healthy, active and safe within our fun and social environment. With representatives from the Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service, as well as other local organisations such as Age UK and Energy Advice, being available to offer advice and information.

Councillor Malcolm Gee, Chair of South Derbyshire District Council said:

“It’s great to finally have this popular event back on the local calendar and I would encourage any residents looking to attend, especially those who may have transportation concerns, to register when the phone lines open.

“There will be lots going on and I am looking forward to it immensely, so I would hate anyone to miss out - as it looks like it will be a perfect way to spend a spring afternoon!”

This year the event will include a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee theme - a great opportunity to get dressed up and commemorate, socialise and celebrate in style.
