Win for Wain in best shop window competition

David Wain Insurance Services Ltd has been voted the best shop window in Swadlincote this Christmas.

The insurance broker on High Street received 226 votes in a competition run by South Derbyshire District Council.

A total of 697 people took part in the vote, which was open for 24 hours on Small Business Saturday held on 4 December. A total of 15 local businesses with premises in Swadlincote took part.

Councillor Malcolm Gee, South Derbyshire District Council’s Chair, said: “I’d like to send my warmest congratulations to David Wain Insurance Services Ltd on being awarded The Bridget Edmonds Memorial Trophy for winning the best Christmas shop window competition. They were also awarded a wonderful Snowdog figurine for having the most public votes overall.

“I’d also like to extend my sincere congratulations to Hillfield Animal Home RSPCA Shop Swadlincote on winning the Community and Charity trophy for best Christmas shop window.

“All of their hard work in planning and decorating the shop front has paid off.”

The Dance & Music Centre in the Delph Centre in Swadlincote came second in the vote with 164 votes. Andrew Charles Hair Salon, West Street was in third place with 99 votes and Simply Needlecraft Haberdashery & Sewing Studio, High Street was fourth with 92 votes.

Councillor Gee added: “Swadlincote has a wonderful selection of local businesses and the fact that so many people took the opportunity to vote shows what a thriving business community we have.

“Hopefully people will go and have a look around the Christmas shop windows and admire the creativity on show.”

“I would just encourage people to remember that local businesses are for life, not just for Christmas.”

The awards were presented at the end of a successful day of family events in Swadlincote consisting of market stalls, free The Snowman and The Snowman and The Snowdog film screenings, festive crafts and face painting.

Thousands of people have now visited the town centre to see The Snowman and The Snowdog sculpture trail, which features twelve individually painted sculptures of The Snowman from the popular Raymond Briggs novel together with a further eight sculptures of The Snowdog,

A free trail map is available from Trail HQ on the Delph market square for people taking part.

The Snowman™ and The Snowdog trail is part of the Council’s commitment to supporting local businesses, many of which will have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
