It is easy to become distracted with Zoom calls or Christmas quizzes or the multitude of other things competing for your attention.

So, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has compiled some Top Tips to help everyone stay safe this festive season…

Check all Christmas lights conform to British Standard
Make a fire escape plan
Take the time to check on the elderly
Never leave cooking unattended
Keep candles away from flammable objects and always fully extinguish
Don’t attach decorations to lights or heaters
Test your smoke alarms every week
Always make sure cigarettes are properly extinguished
Use a fireguard with an open fire and never store fuel close by
Switch off and unplug Christmas lights before bed
Never overload electrical sockets
