Small rise in Council Tax to safeguard council services

South Derbyshire residents will see the amount they pay in Council Tax for services provided by South Derbyshire District Council increase by an average of just 6 pence per week on a band D property.

Councillors approved the increase at their meeting yesterday evening, Wednesday 26 February.

This means the amount the average resident will pay for services provided by the council will rise from £162.31 each year to 165.48 each year, an increase of 1.95 per cent.

Councillor Martyn Ford, South Derbyshire District Council’s leader, said:

“Each day our staff work hard to provide a variety of services to our residents from bin collections to supporting local businesses to grow.

“I am proud of the services we provide and in order to continue to provide them as efficiently as possible in the coming year, we have kept the increase in the amount people pay in Council tax for the services we provide to a minimum.”

Although residents pay their Council Tax to South Derbyshire District Council, the council keeps only nine per cent for the services it provides including bin collections, street cleaning, maintaining award-winning parks and open spaces, environmental protection, customer services including revenues and benefits, economic development, markets, town centre events and tourism.

Other parts of the Council Tax goes to Derbyshire County Council for services including education, highways, libraries, children’s services and adult social care.

Other parts of the Council Tax goes to Derbyshire Police receive to provide policing in the county and the remainder is paid to Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Most residents in South Derbyshire will also pay for services provided by their local parish council – the amount they will pay here will vary.
