Fly-tipper fined after dumping fridges

A fly-tipper has been fined after dumping two fridge freezers on private land in South Derbyshire.

Shane Croxall transported the items and discarded them on land at Bretby Park, in Bretby Lane, on Friday, July 14, 2017.

A landowner provided information and asked South Derbyshire District Council‘s Safer Neighbourhood Wardens to investigate further.

Croxall was given the opportunity to pay a £400 fine. His failure to pay the fine or turn up to Derby Magistrates Court in June 2018 resulted in a warrant being issued for his arrest.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to the illegal disposal of waste under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 at Derby Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

Croxall, of Holly Road, Measham, was ordered to pay costs of £1,638.12. He was also fined £400 and told to pay a £40 victim surcharge.

Councillor Andy MacPherson, Chairman of Environmental and Development Services at the District Council, said: “We do not and will not tolerate fly-tipping in South Derbyshire.

“Fly-tipping is a deliberate and thoughtless act that blights the environment and causes huge expense to farmers and landowners. As well as being a source of pollution and a danger to public health, it undermines legitimate waste businesses.

"Failure to properly dispose of any type of waste is simply not acceptable and we will take action against anyone caught.”

Residents are encouraged to dispose of their household waste at the recycling centre in Park Road, Newhall. The Council also provides a free household waste collection service every Saturday morning for areas that are more than five miles away from the tip.
