Businesses encouraged to be a part of Small Business Saturday

Businesses big and small are being invited to showcase their shops, services and Swadlincote in the run-up to Christmas.

The #SwadOffers Christmas Voucher initiative starts on Small Business Saturday, which exists to encourage consumers to shop local and support the lifeblood of the economy.

Traders in the town are being encouraged to get involved and help bump up footfall in the town even further from December 1 onwards.

This includes participating in a special scheme where shoppers are given a voucher every time they make a purchase. Once they have four, they can enter into a prize draw to win a bumper Christmas hamper.

Other initiatives include displaying striking snowflakes in shop windows to see if they can be spotted by eagle-eyed visitors aiming to win a prize in a Snowflake Hunt.

Independent traders can also sign up to exhibit at the town’s ever-popular Christmas market, which will offer gifts, live music, fairground rides, crafts, free face painting,  and food and drink stalls on Saturday, December 1.

Cllr Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Swadlincote’s unique retailers to attract even more visitors and shout about what they have to offer over the festive season and beyond.

“Our traders are the lifeblood of our local economy and we want to help celebrate their talents and creations in any way we can.

“We would urge shops of all shapes and sizes to get involved and help ensure the atmosphere and anticipation is crackling in the town over what promises to be a busy Christmas period.”

The #SwadOffers and Snowflake Hunt initiatives have been organised by the District Council and Swadlincote Town Team, a coalition of businesses, organisations, volunteers and local residents who care passionately about the town.

Businesses that want to take part in the initiative should contact 01283 595791 and sign up by Wednesday, November 21.

Businesses and traders interested in having a stall at the Christmas Market can book by telephoning Simon Wardle on 07784 033414.
