Chairman takes the reins for second successive year

Cllr Michael Stanton has been named Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council for the second successive year.

The Ticknall resident was given the prestigious honour at the Civic Council meeting at Swadlincote Town Hall on Thursday, May 24.

During his first year with the chain, Cllr Stanton’s main highlight was granting the freedom of South Derbyshire to the 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC).

Around £6,500 was also raised towards his chosen charity, the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Cllr Stanton, whose consort is his wife Heather, is looking to better this during his second year and continue to champion the vital work that volunteers do.

The Repton ward representative said:

“I am privileged to stand as Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council for a second successive year.

“I’ve once again chosen the Air Ambulance as my charity. Its role is so important, especially during times of heavy traffic and congestion. They can simply just get to incidents so much quicker than traditional means and save lives.

“I’m also keen to continue to showcase the often unsung work of volunteers, to recognise those heroes who give up their time to support others.

“We have so many amazing people, places and organisations in the District and I’m looking forward to hearing and seeing more of their stories.”

Cllr David Muller, who represents the Etwall ward, has been named as the Vice-Chairman of the Council for the coming year.

He and Cllr Stanton are looking to attend as many events as possible and welcome invites from members of the public, businesses and voluntary organisations.
