FoL2018 FoL2018

A fun-filled weekend of free entertainment awaits later this month when spellbinding stunt shows, exciting fairground rides, appetising food and rhythmic music will come to life at South Derbyshire District Council’s Festival of Leisure.

An exhilarating Helter Skelter Western Show is booked for the Saturday which includes whip cracking, fire whip, knife throwing and the biggest lasso in the country.

Andrew Van Buren, as seen on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and the BBC’s The Generation Game, will also be making an appearance on Sunday with his magical mind-boggling illusions.

Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“The Festival of Leisure is always a show-stopping event in the District. The unusual and unmissable entertainment usually attracts thousands of families. This year, they can enjoy the usual blend of high-velocity arena entertainment, sports taster sessions, children’s activities, delicious food and live music.

“Some of the entertainment we have lined up includes the Force Ten Big Band, the Dr Diablo fire eating act, the Gresley Colliery Band, Charlie’s Angels Dance Academy, a Falconry display and much more. There will be something for all to enjoy.

“It’s a real opportunity to celebrate everything that’s great about our superb District and to show it off to visitors from across the region and beyond. We look forward to seeing everyone there having some fun in the Swadlincote sunshine.”

The RAF Spitfire fly-past, as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, is scheduled to take place at 12.56pm on the Saturday and 3.01pm on the Sunday.

Other confirmed weekend acts include: Bubbleologist – a bubble performer and stilt walker, Christina’s School of Dance – street dance performers, Djembe Drumming - Tribal Vibes Djembe drumming workshops, Elle’s school of dance & drama- showcasing contemporary street dance, Japanese Taiko Drumming - performance and workshops, Savage Skills - the UK’s leading freestyle mountain bike stunt team and much more. Brightside Vets is sponsoring Touch FM’s Mark O’Sullivan to host on both days.

Guests will also get the chance to meet Aldabra giant tortoises. Originally from the Indian Ocean islands, they can grow over 122cm in length, weigh over 200kg and can live up to 200 years old.

The 2018 Festival of Leisure is expected to attract around 10,000 people. It takes place at Maurice Lea Memorial Park at Church Gresley from 12.30pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24.
