Youngsters encouraged to dream big and help their local community
Young volunteers are being invited to get stuck into a raft of fun activities to help make a positive difference in their community while at the same time helping themselves.
The annual Dreamscheme project gives eight to 18-year-olds in South Derbyshire a chance to learn new skills and develop confidence amongst their peers through free community-based projects.
Activities lined up this summer include tidying up and creating a serene environment for Supported Housing tenants’ communal gardens, putting green fingers to use and getting stuck into some planting, sprucing up designated areas through painting as well as grabbing some gloves and litter picking in the War Memorial site in Newhall Park.
Hours worked and points collected throughout the project will then be exchanged for a reward trip to Conkers, where youngsters will have the chance to enjoy a unique mix of indoor and outdoor activities at the heart of the National Forest, on Friday, August 10.
Cllr Jim Hewlett, Chairman of Housing and Community Services at the Council, said:
“Our Dreamscheme project gives youngsters the chance to work together, learn new skills and grow their confidence within the community.
“We’re sure these latest projects will prove rewarding, so we would urge anyone between the ages of eight and 18 to come forward and get involved.”
Projects will take place from Monday, August 6 to Friday, August 10. Locations include The Rise, Newhall Community Allotment; Newhall Park; Midway Allotment, Chestnut Avenue; Midway Community Centre and Unity Close, Church Gresley.
The Dreamscheme project, which started in 2011, has helped give lots of young people a chance to join a team, challenge each other and take part in activities that benefit the local community.
Previous successes have included planting flowers in the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Garden, decorating Overseal Village Hall, designing a graffiti mural for a youth shelter, creating a community garden in Hartshorne, fence painting with elderly residents and planting and maintaining the Swadlincote Town Centre Planters.
Long-standing Dreamschemer, Callum Hull, also recently scooped the Raising Aspirations (RISE) Recognised Award for overcoming barriers such as socialising and mixing with people. He has now gone on to become a valued member of the project.
All equipment will be provided throughout the week of free activities. Volunteers are advised to bring a packed lunch and drinks.
