Permanent tribute for ‘Gentle Giant’ boxing hero

Jack Bodell Jack Bodell

A South Derbyshire and national boxing hero who stayed true to his roots is set to be celebrated in his home town.

Former British, European and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, the late Jack Bodell, is having a street named after him as part of a new 14-home development in Newhall.

It’s been made possible by South Derbyshire District Council, developer Premier Property (Central) Ltd and the Magic Attic history archive.

Bodell Close, near to where the ‘gentle giant’ was born and raised, will act as a permanent tribute to his knockout sporting achievements.

Daughter Faye Radbourne, who lives in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, said:

“Dad would have been incredibly honoured to hear that a street is being named after him. He always kept Swadlincote close to his heart and in his corner.

“We are so touched at the effort that South Derbyshire District Council, Premier Property (Central) Ltd and the Magic Attic have put in to keeping his memory alive. We are very proud of his achievements and hope that others can feel inspired by his boxing journey.”

Bodell got hooked on boxing at the tender age of nine and regularly trained at a gym in Newhall’s Royal Oak pub. He became a miner at Church Gresley colliery at the age of 15 and became the National Coal Board amateur light heavyweight champion three times.

His professional boxing career reached its pinnacle during the 1960s and 70s, achieving a record of 58 wins out of 71 contests, including 31 by knockout. He retired in 1972.

After hanging up his gloves he ran a fish and chip shop in Coventry, opened by his friend and sparring partner Muhammad Ali. Even after leaving the town, Jack was a regular visitor to Swadlincote, often enjoying a game of dominoes in the Foresters pub, in High Street.

Frank McArdle, Chief Executive of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“Swadlincote is rich in culture, heritage and inspirational individuals. This street naming is a fitting tribute to a local boxing hero who made his mark nationally and internationally.

“Jack Bodell is one of South Derbyshire’s and Britain’s boxing heroes and is also honoured in our Swadlincote Heritage Trail. We’re extremely proud of his achievements and are delighted that his name and story will live on for generations to come.”

The new homes are located off the junction of Oversetts Road and Main Street, in Newhall.

James Hardwick, Director at Bretby based Premier Property (Central) Ltd, said:

“It is really a privilege to be involved in this development for a local lad turned champion. He was an idol to so many and it is an honour to be involved in such a momentous initiative. We hope that this development will strengthen the memories that people have of Jack Bodell and his amazing sporting career.”

The street-naming will take place, with Jack’s family and civic dignitaries, at midday on Tuesday, July 24.
