Hampers bring Christmas cheer to residents and families

Dozens of residents across South Derbyshire have received some early festive cheer after being presented with Christmas hampers.

A total of 31 hampers, packed full of everyday essentials and festive treats, were delivered by volunteer elves to kick-start the season of goodwill.

The hampers, part of South Derbyshire District Council’s Dreamscheme, have been given to members of the public nominated by others.

Hampers included presents donated by the Young Ones – a group of volunteers who provide hampers and support to new mothers and families in Burton and South Derbyshire. 

Others to benefit include a 65-year-old grandfather who is bringing up his two-year-old grandson, a couple living in temporary accommodation with their four children and an 80-year-old woman who volunteers in her community.

A grandmother who looks after her three grandchildren, one of which has autism, and a 40-year-old lady diagnosed with cancer and cannot work were also recipients.

Some tenants were so touched to be nominated that they burst into tears.

Mother of one, Laura Riley, of Woodville, said: "Thank you very much, I'm really grateful!"

Jade White, of Church Gresley, who has two young daughters, said: "This is amazing! You've made me cry!"

Donations were received from the CVS food bank, Church Gresley Community Group, local churches, businesses, Council staff and South Derbyshire residents.

Contractors GF Tomlinson donated six hampers - one for each of the new two-bedroom Council homes it is currently building in Lullington Road, Overseal.

Cllr Jim Hewlett, Chairman of Housing and Community Services at South Derbyshire District Council, said: “Christmas is a time of giving and thinking about others.

“Our hamper programme, now in its eighth year, captures the essence of the season and is a welcome early present for residents.

“Sincere thanks go to our sponsors and all those involved in the scheme in whatever shape or form. Their kind-heartedness is bringing a sprinkling of happiness to the lives of individuals and families across South Derbyshire.”

Dreamscheme is a youth involvement initiative aimed at youngsters aged between eight and 18, encouraging them to give back to their communities. Participants are rewarded with a memorable trip out for their efforts.
