Cakes, crafts and classical music await the whole family at a free musical extravaganza this weekend in South Derbyshire.

A bumper crowd is expected on Sunday 19 August at the Bandstand on Maurice Lea Memorial Park in Church Gresley, for the inaugural Proms in the Park.

The music starts at 3pm, with Eureka Jazz Band performing New Orleans style jazz before Andy B Goode belts out Rat Pack and Swing era hits from 4.30pm.

At around 6.00pm, Newhall Brass Band will then treat visitors to a number of memorable music pieces before finishing with flag-waving singalongs such as Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance in the grand finale.

Those with a sweet tooth can also enjoy afternoon tea and other tasty treats with Lil’s Parlour. Afternoon teas must be pre-ordered at Lil's Parlour by Thursday, August 16. There will also be hot and cold drinks, cakes and scones to indulge in on the day.

Cllr Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“Proms in the Park promises to be a fun filled family occasion that will live long in the memory. The news that will be music to the ears of all visitors is that entry is free. We have had so many people tell us how excited they are for an event of this nature to be held at the scenic setting of Maurice Lea Memorial Park and it promises to be an amazing atmosphere.”

Carlicious Trikes & Events is providing a vintage horsebox prosecco bar and a traditional ice cream trike, while Alpine Arty Attic will be on hand to offer craft activities for young people and face painters will be bringing a sprinkling of glitter to the event. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic, rugs and flags on the day.
