Opportunity knocks at the annual Swadlincote Jobs and Skills Fair

Swad Jobs Fair 2018 Swad Jobs Fair 2018

Jobseekers looking to land their dream position will have the chance to meet local employers and get stuck into a raft of ‘have a go’ interactive activities at a special event in South Derbyshire.

Thousands of job roles are up for grabs as ambitious job seekers, armed with their CVs, are set to flock to the Swadlincote Jobs and Skills Fair.

Job hunters looking to improve their skills will be able to try their hand at a variety of interactive and practical activities, including cupcake decorating, a construction-based ‘mock roof’ joinery puzzle, augmented reality motor vehicle maintenance sessions and virtual precision welding.

For those looking to explore the inner Alan Sugar in them, there will be opportunities to speak to experts about apprenticeships and starting their own business.

The Jobs and Skills Fair takes place at the Green Bank Leisure Centre in Civic Way on Thursday, April 26. Schools and students are invited to explore their prospects between 9am and 11am before the doors open to the wider public between 11am and 1pm. The event is free and open to all, with no need to book.

Cllr Hilary Coyle, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“The event is a great way for local people to be inspired and explore what opportunities are available in the area. As well as offering them a platform to test their skills and see which roles would suit them, it is a chance to network and connect with a range of employers offering a large number of jobs.

“We would urge jobseekers to head to the event and bring several copies of their CV along with them and be prepared to apply for jobs on the spot.”

Chameleon School of Construction will be showcasing top of the range construction equipment for those wanting a career path where they can ‘get their hands dirty.’ Army Reserves soldiers will be on hand to talk to people about the various opportunities available as well as showcasing some of the state of the art equipment used on exercises. Another key exhibitor is Wheels to Work, which will be raising awareness of support for those struggling to travel to work or training.

Some of the major employers keen to attract eager applicants include Active Fleet Solutions, Burton Albion Community Trust, East Midlands Airport, GI Group, Hilton at St George’s Park, Mediline Nurses and Carers, Musk Engineering, Plastic Omnium, The Keystone Group, Top Hat Industries, Two Twenty Staircases and UPS.

There will also be a range of support services and providers on hand including CT Skills, Derby College, Juniper, Keith Cook Training, South Derbyshire Business Advice Service, South Derbyshire District Council Housing and others.

Swadlincote-based Musk Engineering Ltd is the main sponsor of the event. Musk is a provider of engineering solutions to the process industries and avidly supports enhancing skills in South Derbyshire.

The event is being delivered by the Department for Work and Pensions, Burton and South Derbyshire College and South Derbyshire District Council, supported by the South Derbyshire Skills and Employment Group.

Any business or organisation interested in exhibiting or running a ‘have a go’ activity on the day can book by emailing southstaffs.employerengagementteam@dwp.gsi.gov.uk.

Schools wishing to attend must email economic.development@southderbyshire.gov.uk to register.
