Get yer sen dairn to Swad, me duck

Ay Up Mi Duck Day 2017 Ay Up Mi Duck Day 2017

The townsfolk of Swadlincote are being invited to go quackers at a special celebration of the unique local dialect.

Ay Up Me Duck Day is back by popular demand for a second year on Tuesday 1 August 2017, with a whole range of free family friendly activities scheduled to take place.

They include an activity trail around Swadlincote to celebrate all things South Derbyshire and a rug-making workshop, as well as a chance to make your own cup and saucer in the style of renowned local pottery producer TG Green.

New for 2017 is the Swadlincote Duck Hunt, when between 1 and 11 August 2017 participating shops and businesses will hide ducks bearing a ‘Swad saying,’ with spotter sheets available from Sharpe’s Pottery Museum and other venues around town.

Prizes on offer for the duck hunt, which again is free to enter, include activity passes, family days out, a coach trip, meal vouchers, a narrowboat journey and much more.

Ay up Me Duck Day has been organised by Derbyshire County Council with support from South Derbyshire District Council, whose chairman Councillor Michael Stanton will be around on the day to visit venues where activities are taking place – at Sharpe’s Pottery Museum, Swadlincote Library, Swadlincote Adult Education Centre and on The Delph.

Councillor Stanton said: “South Derbyshire is unique in so many ways and it’s always good to celebrate individuality.

“Ay Up Me Duck Day was held for the first time last year and proved so popular that we just had to bring it back.

“There’ll be so much to enjoy and get involved in, with some great prizes to be won too, so we look forward to welcoming the crowds.”

Other highlights of Ay Up Me Duck Day will be a mini well dressing at Swadlincote Library and the serving of hot Derbyshire oatcakes on The Delph, while the regular weekly market will occupy the High Street.
