Discover the dark side at NightWatch 2017

Night Watch event Night Watch event

The wondrous world of the woodland after dark is waiting to be discovered by visitors to Rosliston Forestry Centre.

NightWatch 2017 is an enthralling evening of walks, talks, presentations and activities aimed at those aged six and above.

Visitors will have the chance to learn about the extraordinary echo location powers of bats with Derbyshire Bat Group experts and – weather permitting – to watch these fascinating creatures flitting across the sky.

There will be an owl display on the picnic area, including an opportunity to talk to the falconers about these nocturnal fliers, while the South Derbyshire Badger Group will provide information about one of our most charismatic native mammals.

As the skies darken, there will be opportunities to view the heavens with the help of Rosliston Astronomy Group and follow an atmospheric candle trail to trap moths with the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Entomological Society.

If all that is not enough, people can enjoy the exotic by handling a whole array of creatures brought along by Bugs ‘n’ Bones.

Kate Allies, manager of the Environmental Education Project at South Derbyshire District Council, said: “Woodlands at night are mysterious and unfamiliar places for most of us.

“Our NightWatch event gives families an opportunity to enjoy a night-time adventure and to be fascinated and educated by interesting and informative displays and talks by local experts.

“It is always a fantastic event and we look forward to welcoming everyone along.”

The event takes place between 7.30pm and 11.30pm on Friday 28 July 2017, with tickets priced £2.50 per person available on the night. Visitors should bring a torch, drinks and snacks.

If the weather is wet the activities will take place indoors until 9.30pm.
