Proms event has licence to thrill

Last Night at the Proms performance Last Night at the Proms performance

The audience at South Derbyshire’s popular Last Night of the Proms this year will be shaken and stirred by music celebrating the world of that most famous of secret agents, James Bond.

The event will see Newhall Band using its licence to thrill by playing plenty of the well-loved music from the films, as well as all the traditional proms favourites.

Adding some fun to the programme, the band will also include a spoof based on the much-loved BBC sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo!, with a German Captain and Rene interacting with the audience. This set has won awards for Newhall Band this year in brass band competitions and has proved a winner with audiences too.

After the interval, a set to mark the 50th anniversary of Sgt Pepper with a Beatles tribute will be played before the evening comes to an end with the traditional Proms music.

Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, Councillor Michael Stanton, said: “The Last Night of the Proms is always an evening of great music, fun and enjoyment and this year promises to be the best yet.

“We are looking forward to a wonderful production, delivering thrills and excitement as good as any spy movie.”

Last Night of the Proms is on Saturday 2 September 2017. Although the band will not take to the stage at the Glade in the Forest until 7pm, gates at the Rosliston Forestry centre arena open at 5.30pm, allowing guests to set up their chairs, arrange their rugs and start to enjoy their picnics.

Food will not be available at the event but a licensed bar will be open to serve hot and cold drinks.

Bow ties will be optional but the show is outdoors so people need to remember to dress for the weather.

The event will help raise funds for the chairman of the council’s chosen charity, the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance. Donations to the charity will be encouraged and accepted at the event.

Tickets cost £5 for adults, £2.50 for children and concessions and a family ticket is £12. For further details and to buy tickets call Swadlincote Tourist Information Centre tel: 01283 222848.
