Organising a community event

Voluntary events are an important aspect of everyday life that encourage people to play a more active part in their communities.

They may celebrate a particular occasion, raise funds for a good cause or simply bring people in a community closer together.

If you are looking to set up an event but don’t know where to start, help is at hand from the Government to help you achieve your goal.

All events, including those in aid of charity, must comply with recognised safety standards. If you are planning to organise an outdoor event, the Derbyshire Events Safety Advisory Group (DESAG) provides advice and guidance.

If you think you will need to close a road, email chairsoffice@southderbyshire.gov.uk more than six weeks in advance of your event. We will send you free guidance and an application form, which will be used to consult with relevant authorities such as the police and Derbyshire County Council. Once approved, we will send you the Order and Notice together with any guidance from the consultees.

If you wish to operate a fair on private or Council-owned land, you are required to give us six months’ notice of the date the fair is to take place. We will ensure the rides are properly inspected and insured. The operator requires a permit from us before the fair can be held.

Feel free to invite our Chairman and the Swadlincote Town Crier to your event to help further raise its profile.
