World War One commemorative walks

Using a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to mark the centenary of the First World War in South Derbyshire, a series of walks have been put together looking at the social, economic and cultural impact of the conflict.

The walks were developed by expert Dot Morson, with support from our Environmental Education Project and the Magic Attic Archives. 

‘Echoes of Heroes’ is a pleasant urban walk linking two parks and reveals evidence of changes to Swadlincote’s landscape in the post war years, especially in the development of two memorial parks: Eureka Park and Maurice Lea Memorial Park. Each park also has a commemorative history trail containing more information about the reasons why each park was given to local people as a memorial to the First World War.

'Lullington - The Home Front' is a short walk around the village looking at social and economic changes following the war.

A commemorative walk around Bretby is the longest in the series and includes fascinating social and cultural information, including a link to the discovery of the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh, Tutankhamun.
