Council Tax advice for Ukrainian refugee hosts
Hosting a refugee in your home – what you need to know*
- If you plan to host a Ukrainian refugee(s) in your main home, you will not lose any existing Council Tax discounts, Council Tax reductions, disregards or exemptions (including single persons discount) for the duration of the refugee(s) stay (up to three years).
- If you currently claim single persons discount or benefit from an existing council tax discount, reduction, disregard, or exemption, please contact us as soon as the refugee(s) move in, so we can update your council tax account.
Hosting refugees in empty properties – what you need to know*
- If you plan to host a Ukrainian refugee(s) in an empty property that you own, the refugee household will be liable for 50% of the standard council tax bill for that property (a 50% disregard will be applied).
- As the owner of the property/landlord, you can then choose to pay the 50% bill on behalf of the refugee household if you wish to.
- Please contact us as soon as the refugee(s) move into your empty property, so we can amend your account and bill accordingly.
