Community Climate Communications

South Derbyshire District Council has an ongoing programme of communicating and engaging with residents, communities, businesses and other organisations.

To get involved with the Council’s Climate and Environment Action Plan and programme you can chose the way that is most convenient for you, or your community as detailed below:

South Derbyshire is a member of the Local Authority Energy Partnership with Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire councils which provides community support on climate through the Marches Agency called “Everybody’s talking climate change”. You can register your local group, events, network and much more:

South Derbyshire also has Environmental Education team, who support schools, local environmental forum and local volunteering at Rosliston Forestry Centre. Find out more - click here

Also the Council support many events like World Environment Day, Great British Spring clean, Clean Air Day and much more! Why not sign up to our social media channels:

Comment on the climate action the Council is taking or on the progress it is making in reducing its carbon footprint by signing up to our social media pages and asking questions, that will of course be answered by our communications team.

The Council also run online surveys around various climate change or energy reduction programmes where we encourage your participation to influence the action that needs to be taken to reduce emissions. Recent Online Surveys have been conducted on how best to support households increase the energy efficiency of their home and how to influence the climate change requirements in the Council’s new Local Plan. These online surveys are promoted through social media channels and the Council’s webpage on a regular basis, so sign up now to get your views heard.

If you want to discuss the Climate Emergency with us face to face, the Council also runs Town Hall Events to display the actions being taken around climate action and to give you an opportunity to discuss your thoughts, ideas and suggestion on climate change, its impact and what how the Council should be responding. These events are either run by the Council’s Environmental Health Team or by Marches Agency on the Council’s behalf. These ‘face to face’ events can be specific, such as the energy efficiency events or more general around environmental sustainability guidance and support.

If you are interested in some individual development around the Climate Emergency, the Council offers online Carbon Literacy Training. This training is free to residents of South Derbyshire and is funded by the Council. These training courses are well advertised on the Council’s social media pages and home web page as well as being promoted by your local Parish Council. Watch out for the next round of training dates and details.

Your Parish Councils are a great way of engaging with Climate Change and influencing what the Council does. All Parish Councils can be contacted through the Parish Clerk – contact details can be found on the South Derbyshire District Council web pages.

The Council works through its Environmental Education Team with Parish Councils and to support and fund competitions and incentives for Schools and Colleges to actively support environmental projects, art and workshops.

The Council’s Climate, Environmental and Biodiversity Officers are always encouraged to discuss topics with Community Groups. Whether you are Schools, Colleges, Charity Groups, Residents Groups or any other Community Group the Council can organise the relevant experienced officers to attend your meetings and engage with you.

South Derbyshire District Council is always looking to continue its engagement, communication and collaboration with Businesses across the District. Whatever the size or sector the Council has a Business Advisor who can support you and call on the subject matter experts within the Council to give you guidance on energy consumption, carbon footprints, carbon emission reduction and support your organisations understanding of renewable energy sources, the green economy and local grants that may be available for decarbonisation measures.
