Burials and burial records

Cemeteries in South Derbyshire are now open to the public following new Government guidance. Please observe social distancing when you visit the cemetery – remain at least two metres from people not in your household at all times. Cemeteries may have to close temporarily for burial services.

For most of those making funeral arrangements the services of a funeral director will be obtained.

We work closely with funeral directors to ensure the funeral is carried out in accordance with the family's wishes.

However, should you wish to be more personally involved in all aspects of arranging a funeral, an independent funeral option may be considered.

To make funeral arrangements personally, please contact the Cemeteries Officer for further advice. As part of the process you will be required to complete our Notice of Interment form. (pdf, 218kb)

An experienced cemetery officer attends each funeral to ensure it is carried out in a dignified and professional manner.

We provide cemeteries at Aston-on-Trent, Church Gresley, Etwall, Findern, Marston-on-Dove and Newhall and their locations can be found by viewing our cemeteries map at the bottom of the page.

Most of our cemeteries have consecrated (blessed as sacred) and unconsecrated areas where you can buy graves. The consecrated ground is consecrated by the Church of England.

Burial records

More than 10,000 burial records regarding our six cemeteries can be viewed at our Civic Offices in Swadlincote.

Additional information can be obtained during office hours.
