New environmentally sustainable licence plates introduced

South Derbyshire District Council is pleased to announce the introduction of its new, environmentally sustainable licence plates The new introduction began last week and for the next 12 months, both the new and old plate styles will be in circulation to ensure a smooth transition.

The new plates, made from advanced recycled plastic materials, are designed to last five years—an improvement over the previous one-year replacement cycle. This enhancement comes at no additional cost to the Council.

The new plates use up to 60% less plastic than traditional alternatives and can be destroyed onsite, eliminating transportation for disposal and reducing associated fuel consumption and emissions.

Moreover, the plates are 100% recyclable. After their use, they can be processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for use in heat energy plants, ensuring complete diversion from landfills. This also reduces harmful environmental impacts, as the materials do not contain any PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride).

These improvements not only contribute to a greener, more sustainable future but also align with the Council’s dedication to minimising carbon emissions and waste.
