Council issue crushing warning to fly-tippers

A vehicle believed to have been involved in fly-tipping has been seized, crushed, and put on display by South Derbyshire District Council as a shock warning to other potential offenders.

Using legal powers under waste law, the Council seized the Vauxhall Insignia which they have compelling evidence has been involved in multiple fly-tipping incidents. After seizure, the vehicle was crushed and placed at Arleston Lane, Barrow upon Trent, which is sadly a popular area for fly-tipping in the District.

This powerful visual message will hopefully act as a deterrent to show that fly-tipping will not be tolerated in South Derbyshire and your vehicle could be at risk.

The person who was in possession of the vehicle when it was seized had been given the opportunity to prove that they own it, and they’ve failed to do so. The Council used legal powers to destroy the vehicle and is now using it to illustrate the potential consequences of fly-tipping in South Derbyshire.

Matthew Holford, the District Council’s Head of Environmental Services said: “Fly-tipping is a selfish act which causes enormous annoyance for residents, damages the environment and is often driven by greed or laziness and the Council have been working hard for many years to prevent it.”

These efforts and initiatives are working, as reported incidents for last year were the lowest in nine years.

The Council is confident that this has been due to the continuation of robust action, such as car seizures taken against suspected offenders and the resulting disruption in the activities of the small number of individuals who seek to make a profit from illegal waste disposal.

The seized car is now on temporary display for a short period and you can view a video of it being crushed here.
