South Derbyshire District Council is celebrating after being told four of Swadlincote’s parks have retained the prestigious Green Flag Award - the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

The Council is particularly pleased with the judges’ comments about Maurice Lea Memorial Park’s development.

They said:  “It is apparent that the level of community engagement has grown over recent years and will continue to expand with the visions and actions as outlined within the management plan.”

The Memorial Park in Church Gresley hosts a range of events including the Festival of Leisure and Music in the Park series, as well as being the location to a wide range of activities and groups such as Swadlincote Junior Parkrun and the Senior Adults Tennis Group.

The other three Swadlincote parks to have been awarded Green Flag status are Eureka Park, Swadlincote Woodlands, and Cadley Park.

Commenting on the successes, Councillor Robert Pearson, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said: “The news that these four parks have achieved the accreditation again is testament to the hard work and dedication of the teams that care for the green spaces and run activities within them so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy them.

“With new and refurbished play areas coming to Swadlincote Woodlands and Maurice Lea Memorial Park later in the year, we expect them to go from strength to strength.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved at South Derbyshire District Council on achieving the Green Flag Awards.

“The parks are vital green spaces for communities to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and they provide important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
