Thought-provoking exhibition
This Saturday, January 20, marks the opening of a poignant exhibition at the South Derbyshire Visitor Centre in Swadlincote, focusing on the theme of this year's Holocaust Memorial Day.
The Fragility of Freedom exhibition features posters, information boards, and powerful images, offering an insight into the restriction of freedom and self-identity experienced by Jewish communities during one of the darkest periods in history. Additionally, there are images and firsthand accounts from Holocaust survivors.
Organised by South Derbyshire District Council, the exhibition will be open to the public at the South Derbyshire Visitor Centre, located at No 1 High Street, Swadlincote. Visitors are invited to explore the thought-provoking displays from January 20 to January 30, between 10 am and 2 pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
HMD, which falls on January 27, is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, and in the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
Explaining the Fragility of Freedom theme, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust says that in every genocide that has taken place, those who are targeted for persecution have had their freedom restricted and removed.
Other HMD actions in South Derbyshire will see Councillor Sean Bambrick, Chair of the Council, uncovering a plaque next to a newly planted pear tree at Rosliston Forestry Centre dedicated for the day.
A series of social media posts will go out on the council’s platforms throughout the period of activity, providing links to more details and background stories.
