Three Green Flags retained

South Derbyshire has been awarded three coveted Green Flag Awards - with Maurice Lea Memorial Park, Eureka Park and Swadlincote Woodlands all retaining recognition of being amongst the country’s best parks.

The prestigious Green Flag Award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

After two years that have seen our parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely, the news that three of our parks have achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the teams that makes South Derbyshire’s parks a great space that everyone can enjoy.

Councillor Gordon Rhind, Chair of South Derbyshire District Council’s Housing and Community Services Committee, said: “This is great news – to be awarded three Green Flag Awards for the second year in a row.

“I know how much local residents value our parks and green spaces and am sure they would like to join me in passing on our gratitude to all the staff, volunteers and members of the public that help keep them in such great condition all year round.”

Swadlincote Woodlands secured a prestigious Green Flag Award for the first time in October of last year.

Commenting on the news that three South Derbyshire parks have met the Green Flag Award standard, Keep Britain Tidy’s Accreditation Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Swadlincote Woodlands, Maurice Lea Memorial and Eureka Park worthy of a Green Flag Award.

“These parks are a vital green space for the community in South Derbyshire. This award is testament to all the hard work of staff and volunteers, who do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
