Melbourne’s electric vehicle points installed

Melbourne’s South Derbyshire District Council ran public car park is the latest recipient in the District to get new electric vehicle ‘fast’ charging points.

The installation of these eight new charge points supports the Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy to encourage the move to electric vehicles and to reduce vehicle emissions by providing charge-points near to residential housing where people may not have access to ‘off-street charging’. These charging points are operated as part of the electric vehicle charging network, which aims to make a charging system accessible to all residents across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

The District Council now offers the following charging points:

• Two Rapid Charge – where a battery can be charged in 20 – 60 minutes, are located at the Council’s Bus Station car park, DE11 0AH.
• Eight Fast Charge where a battery can be charged in 4 – 6 hours, at
  • Rink Drive, DE11 8JL
  • Arnold Close, DE11 9HF
  • High Street, Hilton, DE65 5GG
  • Melbourne Assembly Rooms, DE73 8GF

The final works are also being completed on an installation at Station Road, Hatton.

Local residents are being provided with an additional reason to switch to electric as they can apply for a discount card at http://www.chargeyourcar.org.uk/d2n2/  There is a £20 yearly fee for the card, however, this provides access to a reduced tariff which currently saves 10p per kWh charge.

Provision of the new charging points is the latest initiative in South Derbyshire District Council’s bid to become carbon-neutral by 2030, having declared a Climate Emergency in 2019.

Councillor Steve Taylor, Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council’s Environmental and Development Services Committee said: “These new charge points are the result of the first phase of the Council’s Charge Point Infrastructure Plan, which aims to deliver residential electric vehicle charging infrastructure in an accessible and fair way across the whole of South Derbyshire.”

Work has already started on the Council’s ‘Phase 2’ plans which seek to work with other car park owners to continue to bring investment into South Derbyshire and grow the local electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
