Litter pickers needed to spring into action

South Derbyshire residents are being encouraged to make an extra-special effort in this year’s Great British Spring Clean and show their love for the outdoor spaces that have been so important over the past 12 months.

The annual event, co-ordinated by Keep Britain Tidy, will take place between 28 May and 13 June and this year has a target of cleaning a million miles across the country. When individuals or groups register to carry out a litter pick they are being asked to pledge time for their activity. This time is then converted to miles and more than 530,000 miles have already been pledged by willing volunteers.

Once again South Derbyshire District Council will be playing an important part in proceedings by providing a range of website resources for Litter Heroes, lending litter picking equipment and collecting rubbish when the litter pick is complete.

More information about South Derbyshire Litter Heroes can be found on the Council’s website -  Keep South Derbyshire Tidy | South Derbyshire District Council and about the Great British Spring Clean at Great British Spring Clean | Keep Britain Tidy , where you can also pledge your time and register your litter pick.

Councillor, Steve Taylor, Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council’s Environmental and Development Services Committee said: “Previous local contributions to the Great British Spring Clean have been a great success and made a noticeable difference to the local environment. Many of our streets and open spaces have been heavily used during the pandemic and so this is a great opportunity to give them a little extra attention.

“I would appeal to local people to get involved and play their part in this very worthy cause, but at the same time be mindful of the ongoing Covid restrictions and pay attention to the social distancing guidance provided by the Great British Spring Clean organisers.”
