South Derbyshire residents, schools, community groups and organisations can now apply to make their surroundings greener and leafier thanks to the return of the annual Free Tree scheme.

South Derbyshire District Council is giving away over 1,000 free trees for the 18th consecutive year, to help the District bloom and blossom in the heart of The National Forest.

Applicants can choose from a variety of two-year-old trees approximately 30cm to 60cm high, including Cherry Plum, Hazel, Crab Apple and Holly, with applications now open until 5pm on Monday, October 28.

Households can ask for up to two trees; schools, organisations and community groups can apply for up to 10.

The trees can only be collected on either Thursday, November 28 at Rosliston Forestry Centre or Saturday, November 30 on the Delph, Swadlincote from 10am – 2pm on both days.

Cllr Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council said:

“We are delighted to be running this wonderful scheme again. Last year, we gave away over 1,000 trees to residents, schools and organisations across the District. The latest varieties of tree species we’re giving away will help to keep our District looking lush for us now as well as for generations to come.

“As well as boosting our own communities, trees also provide homes and food for amazing communities of birds and insects and they are vital for biodiversity.

“We hope that these trees will also continue to spark a sense of local pride.

“We hope that our growing green environments will continue to improve the quality of life for current and future residents.”

The Free Tree Scheme is run in partnership with The National Forest Company, North West Leicestershire District Council and East Staffordshire Borough Council.

Applications can be made online at www.southderbyshire.gov.uk/freetreescheme.

Anyone without access to the internet can order their trees by ringing Customer Services at SDDC on 01283 595795. More information is available by telephoning the Environmental Education Project team on 01283 535039 or email rosliston@southderbyshire.gov.uk.
