Become a tidy #SwadlincoteHero

Swadlincote Heroes 2018 Swadlincote Heroes 2018

Residents of Swadlincote are being encouraged to come together and help combat litter on the town’s first official Tidy Up day.

The #SwadlincoteHeroes initiative is inviting the local community and businesses to grab a pair of gloves, a litter picker and take part in the Swadlincote Big Tidy Up event.

Those interested are urged to register as a #SwadlincoteHero on the Swadlincote Town Team Facebook page in the Swadlincote Big Tidy Up event or call the Economic Development team on 01283 595791.

Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“This is an excellent and proactive way to help keep our District clean.

“I would like to thank all of the residents and businesses who will be taking time out of their day to tidy up Swadlincote. It demonstrates how a shared sense of pride in our area can help ignite community spirit for people with the same aim, to help make South Derbyshire a better place to live, work and visit.”

Proactive pickers should meet at the newly refurbished Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Garden on West Street from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday, July 17 where pickers, bags and a map will be provided. If members of the public turn up after the start time of 10am, they should make their way to Swadlincote Tourist Information Centre to find out the exact location of where the litter pickers are on their route.

Café Espresso in Sharpe’s Pottery Museum will be providing free drinks after the event.

Swadlincote Town Team, South Derbyshire CVS, South Derbyshire Chamber and the Safer South Derbyshire Partnership have organised the Swadlincote Big Tidy Up, after listening to public feedback. Swadlincote Town Team, in partnership with the Council, is a coalition of businesses, organisations, volunteers and local residents who care passionately about the local area.

To help take action on community feedback, the initiative is also seeking out #SwadlincoteHeroes Ambassadors to continue the fight against litter.

Students from local schools and Burton and South Derbyshire College are also being invited to participate on the day to help develop their confidence.

Anyone willing to donate equipment, such as gloves, first aid kits and refreshments, can contact Economic Development on 01283 595791.
