Volunteering superstar steps down after 15 years

Joan Etwall volunteer Joan Etwall volunteer

Etwall tenant Joan Burton has spent more than 15 years of volunteering within her community.

Now is the time for her to receive something back.

Our Community Engagement Officers Sharon Cole and Laurie Coombs paid a surprise visit to see Joan and thank her for her hard work and dedication.

The 83-year-old, who lives with her husband Colin, has stepped down from running the Etwall Community Group after eight years.

Among other things, she has ran a lunch club, organised trips and holidays and headed up a Knit and Natter group, an exercise class and bingo.

Laurie said: “Joan is such a lovely woman who is always willing to go above and beyond for others.

“She’s played a major role in bringing people closer together and creating a sense of community spirit over a long period of time.

“We wish her all the very best for the future.”

Joan has been presented with flowers in recognition of her efforts.

She said: “I’ve really enjoyed volunteering within the community all these years. It has given me a real sense of satisfaction to know I was helping people and making a difference.”
