Remembering the fallen

South Derbyshire will unite in silence to honour the fallen during Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

A short service will be held on the Delph Public Square in Swadlincote from 10.50am on Armistice Day - Saturday, November 11.

The annual occasion commemorates the signing of the armistice between the allies and Germany, which essentially brought the First World War to an end.

Appreciation of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women will also take place at the War Memorial Gates at Eureka Park, Swadlincote, from 10am on Remembrance Sunday (November 12).

Councillor Michael Stanton, Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, is joining the Royal British Legion and other special guests to lay poppy wreaths.

Reverend Alison Redshaw will lead a short act of remembrance, with The Last Post to be sounded before the parade moves on to Hill Street Baptist Church in the town centre for a service beginning at 11am, to be led by Reverend Simon Thompsett.

Councillor Stanton said:

“So many brave servicemen and women from South Derbyshire and beyond have given their lives for their country.

“This weekend is a chance to reflect and remember those we have lost and to show our gratitude to those that are serving in conflicts around the world.

“We shall never forget the sacrifice they made for us.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend both events.

Other Remembrance Sunday services are being held in villages across the District as people pay their respects to the fallen.
