Countdown to the Victorian Christmas Market

Cllr Stanton Cllr Stanton

Shoppers will take a step back in time and be spoilt for choice when the Victorian Christmas Market and Carols Evening rolls into Swadlincote.

Cllr Michael Stanton, Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, donned his finest top hat to promote the Dickensian themed showstopper on Friday, December 15.

The Delph Public Square will be awash with seasonal sights, sounds and smells between 4.30pm and 7.30pm.

Artists and traders include The Driftwood Artisan, selling unique gifts made from natural products, and Metal Manipulation, producers of contemporary lamps and homewares.

Entertainment includes carols and festive classics from Shone Stewart and Sing 4 Pleasure. Children have the chance to meet a Victorian Father Christmas in his grotto, play vintage games and make their own festive decorations at craft workshops – all for free.

Yuletide treats such as a hog roast, warm mince pies, jumbo pigs in blankets and free tea and coffee will keep visitors fed and watered.

Visitors looking to pick up something special can also take advantage of shops opening late in Swadlincote. Participating stores include Argos and JYSK (The Pipeworks), Blissful Beauty (Alexandra Road), Curly Magpie and Friends, Nomad Tattoo and Retail and Salts (High Street), Personaleyez (Rink Drive), Stan’s Pals (The Delph) and many more.

Cllr Stanton said:

“There is a real buzz and anticipation in and around Swadlincote ahead of the Victorian Christmas Market and Carols Evening.

“Whether you are looking to treat yourself, pick up a present, soak in the entertainment and atmosphere or tantalise your tastebuds, we have something for you.

“It promises to be an unmissable family-friendly event for everyone to enjoy and make a special evening of.”

The Victorian Market and Carols Evening follows on from the Christmas Mega Market being held in the High Street from 9am.

Parking is free in Swadlincote. The event is supported by Anvil Hire based at Drakelow.
