New £15,000 outdoor gym third of its kind in South Derbyshire
Equipment for all ages and abilities is available for free, fun, fresh-air fitness at another South Derbyshire park.
Nine pieces of equipment including a double leg press, chest press and surfer have been installed around the perimeter of Swadlincote’s Eureka Park as part of continuing efforts to improve the facilities on offer.
The gym is the third of its type in the district, with similar developments having been introduced at Newhall Park and Maurice Lea Memorial Park in Church Gresley.
The gym has been funded by Public Health England and the Active Grove Project, which has seen more than £2m spent on facilities in the Swadlincote area.
A consultation group made up of local residents, South Derbyshire District Council’s parklife officer and a district councillor have been instrumental in deciding the type and choice of equipment.
Cllr Jim Hewlett, Chairman of Housing and Community Services at the District Council, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to unveil this state-of-the-art equipment at Eureka Park, which has been delivered through the combined efforts of many groups and individuals.
“The outdoor gyms at Maurice Lea Memorial Park and Newhall Park have been extremely well received and well used, and we’re sure the same will be true at Eureka.
“I would also like to give a big thank you to the volunteers involved in this project for giving up their time and attending meetings and site visits.
“One of the council’s key aims is to increase levels of participation in sport, health and physical activities and this project certainly delivers on that.”
District Council Chairman Councillor Michael Stanton declared the outdoor gym officially open.
