What is Holocaust Memorial Day?
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust promotes and supports international Holocaust Memorial Day to encourage remembrance of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of people killed under Nazi persecution and the more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Why 27 January?
The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
Be a light in the Darkness
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year is ‘be the light in the darkness’ and encourages us to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide.
Consider the different kinds of ‘darkness’ still faced by people today, for example, identity-based persecution, misinformation, denial of justice; and different ways of ‘being the light’, for example, resistance, acts of solidarity, rescue and illuminating mistruths. Click here to read more
