Restart grants

Is my business eligible?

Businesses, with rated premises, that offer in-person services, where the main service/activity takes place in their fixed rate-paying premises, that are eligible for a Restart Grant include:

  • Non-essential retail (including animal groomers with rated premises).
  • Hospitality (restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes, canteens etc).
  • Accommodation (hotels, hostels, bed and breakfast accommodation, holiday apartments etc).
  • Personal care facilities and close contact services.
  • Entertainment (bowling alleys etc).
  • Leisure (leisure centres, gyms etc).

Businesses that are not eligible for a Restart Grant include:

  • Food retailers, including food markets, supermarkets, convenience stores, corners shops, off licences, breweries, pharmacies, chemists, newsagents, animal rescue centres and boarding facilities, building merchants, petrol stations, vehicle repair and MOT services, bicycle shops, taxi and vehicle hire businesses, education providers including tutoring services, banks, building societies and other financial providers, post offices, funeral directors, laundrettes and dry cleaners, medical practices, veterinary surgeries and pet shops, agricultural supply shops, garden centres, storage and distribution facilities, wholesalers, employment agencies and businesses, office buildings, automatic car washes and mobility support shops.
  • Food kiosks and businesses whose main service is a takeaway (this does not include those businesses who have adapted to offer takeaways during periods of restrictions).
  • All leisure retail businesses including coach and tour operators.
  • Accommodation business including private dwellings, education accommodation, residential homes, care homes and residential family centres.
  • Home gyms, home exercise studios, home sports courts and home sports grounds.
  • Businesses that provide personal care goods, rather than services
  • Businesses used solely as training centres for staff, apprentices and others
  • Businesses providing dental services, opticians, audiology services, chiropody, chiropractors, osteopaths and other medical or health services, including services which incorporate personal care services, treatments required by those with disabilities and services relating to mental health.
  • Businesses that are in administration, insolvent or where a striking-off notice has been made, are not eligible for funding under this scheme.

A handful of business types, including dog groomers, that were not eligible for a 'closed for business' grant, are now eligible for a Restart Grant. To find out more, read a full list of eligible businesses, or our Restart Grants policy document.

How to apply

If your business is eligible, and you have applied for/received a ‘closed for business grant’ for any lockdowns/tiered measures since November 2020, you do not need to apply again for the Restart Grant. The government has however asked us to gather the following data from businesses before awarding the grant:

  • The date the business was established
  • The number of employees working for the business
  • Check the business is still trading/intends to trade when the restrictions are lifted

We have contacted all eligible businesses to request this data.

What if I've not applied for a 'Closed for Business' grant yet?

If you did not apply (but would have been eligible for a 'Closed for Business' grant, but would like to apply for a Restart Grant, please email business.grants@southderbyshire.gov.uk for guidance.

The deadline for any new applications is 30 June 2021.

What if my business was not eligible for a 'Closed for Business' grant, but is eligible for a Restart Grant?

Where businesses were not eligible for a 'closed for business' grant, but are eligible for a Restart Grant (for example dog groomers in rated premises), we will use the data these businesses provided for their 'Open for Business' claim. If any such business has not yet applied, please email business.grants@southderbyshire.gov.uk for guidance.

The deadline for any new applications is 30 June 2021.

Will businesses continue to get the regular closed business payments in addition to the Restart Grants?

The Restart Grants are a one-off payment and replace the regular closed business payments (paid via the Local Restrictions Support Grant LRSG (Closed) funding stream) which provide funding up to 31 March 2021. Businesses that receive a Restart Grant may not apply for a Discretionary Restart Grant (supported by the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) funding stream).

What if I received a closed grant and I’m not eligible for a Restart Grant?

If you received a ‘closed for business grant’, but are not eligible for a Restart Grant – for example you may not have a rated business premises – find out more about our Discretionary Restart Grants.
