Projects underway at Oversetts Recreation Ground and Eureka Park
Work has started on two key community projects in South Derbyshire: the refurbishment of Oversetts Recreation Ground in Newhall and the creation of a Bevin Boys Mining Memorial Garden in Eureka Park, Swadlincote.
Oversetts Recreation Ground, located on the edge of Newhall and adjacent to the newly developed Cadley Park, has long been a local sporting venue. Now, the site is undergoing significant improvements aimed at enhancing its facilities for wider community use. The project includes the addition of two changing rooms, a multi-use games area, a green outdoor gym, and upgrades to the car park and footpaths, all designed to make the site more accessible. With a focus on promoting active and inclusive use of the space, the improvements are set to be completed before Christmas.
At the same time, work has begun on a memorial garden in Eureka Park to honour the legacy of local miners. The Bevin Boys Mining Memorial Garden will commemorate the lives of those who worked in the local coal industry, using reclaimed mining artifacts to create a lasting tribute. The garden is being built on the site of the former Eureka coal mine, where the pitheads once stood. The project is expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete, with the final element being a mosaic created by local schoolchildren, which will be laid once the weather permits.
Both projects are eagerly anticipated by the local community and the timelines for completion are weather dependent.
