Explore science and sustainability at Rosliston’s Science Discovery Day and Repair Café

science day science day

Rosliston Forestry Centre is excited to host a Science Discovery Fun Day on Saturday, October 19, from 11am to 3pm. This free event offers a fun-filled day of hands-on science activities for families, with simple experiments led by the Environmental Education Project Team. It’s an engaging and educational experience, open to all ages.

In addition to the science-focused activities, visitors can take advantage of the Rosliston Repair Café, where you can have broken household items, including small electrical appliances, repaired by skilled volunteers from Circularity.org. This is part of the international Repair Café movement, which celebrates its 15th anniversary on the same day. To mark the occasion, guests are encouraged to bring along a birthday card, with a special prize awarded to the design that the Repair Café team likes the most.

As part of the event, Marches Energy Agency, an energy advice charity, will be on hand with a mobile exhibition vehicle. They will provide expert guidance on energy efficiency measures, tips for reducing home energy costs, and information on how to access grants for insulation and other improvements. Homeowners can even get tailored home energy plans to improve energy efficiency, especially in older or hard-to-treat properties.

The day will also feature bird box and bird feeder sessions for beginners, activities with the Rosliston Astronomy Group, live displays by ARD Birds of Prey, a family ‘’owl trail’’ which will run daily to 3 Nov - all adding extra excitement to this family-friendly event.

There’s no need to book, and the event is free of charge (though some activities may have a small fee). Whether you're interested in science, looking for advice on making your home more energy-efficient, or want to repair household items, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re handy at fixing things or keen to support the Repair Café initiative, we’re also looking for volunteers. Get in touch with Kate Allies to find out more about how you can get involved: kate.allies@southderbyshire.gov.uk.

A huge thanks must go to Rolls-Royce plc, the South Derbyshire Partnership, the National Forest Company and Enfinium for supporting the day’s activities.
